Gynecomastia is a medical term that comes from the Greek words for “women-like breasts”. Though this oddly named condition is rarely talked about, it is actually quite common affecting 40 to 60 percent of men. It may affect only one or both breasts. Certain drugs and medical problems have been linked with male breast over development, but there is no known cause for the vast majority of cases.
For men who feel self-conscious about their appearance, breast reduction surgery can help. This procedure removes fat and or glandular tissue from the breasts, and in extreme cases removes excess skin resulting in a flatter, firmer, and better contoured chest.
The incisions are usually under and around the aerola (the pigmented part of the nipple). A surgical vest is worn immediately post op for about 2 weeks for compression, and can be worn under clothing. Excercise is limited for two weeks and can be resumed slowly as comfort permits after this period.
